WC Zwingelberg, Ph.D., was born in South Dakota. After a thirty-five year career in
Baltimore, Maryland, as an artist, college art professor, and Dean of Liberal Arts, Zwingelberg
retired and turned his creativity to writing. He is an avid sailor, holds a fifty-ton master's license
in the U.S. Coast Guard, and has extensively sailed the waters of the U.S. East Coast and the
Bahamas. He currently resides in Deadwood, South Dakota, and keeps an apartment and his
boat in Baltimore. Dr. Zwingelberg is a graduate of South Dakota State University,
West Virginia University, and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. He has written
about and taught art appreciation and aesthetics.
Why Dr. Z?
Probably because of the length of his name, his students affectionately called him Dr. Z. Since he
liked Dr. Z more than the usual butchered rendition, the name stuck.
Why did he stop painting and start to write?
Besides traveling between his homes in Deadwood and Baltimore, he takes rather long voyages
on his sailboat. Carrying his laptop is easier than paint and brushes.
What has he written?
Beyond his published Ph.D. dissertation, a scholarly study dealing with the personal preferences
of art by the public, Zwingelberg has written several articles concerning art appreciation and
aesthetics. He has also edited two art text books. His first book, The Adventures of
Will W. Wilson: Book One: Will's Traveler was released by Trafford Publihing in 2006. BookTwo:
Will's Hunter was released in November 2007.
What is he working on?
He is currently working with his grandaughter and other children on a collection of illustrations based
on The Adventures of Will W Wilson which he hopes to turn into another book.
What's new in his life?
Last summer he sold his sailboat Santee, and bought a 30' Nonsuch catboat which he promptly
named, WILL'S TRAVELER. It is a smaller, more classic design, easier and simpler to sail, more
in keeping with his retired lifestyle. It has undergone major revisions and is currently sailing the ICW on
its way to Florida.

WILL"S TRAVELER at home in the Anchorage Marina in Baltimore

WILL'S TRAVELER at anchor at Double Breasted Cay in the Bahamas in late January. Bill and Will are now back from
a seven month sail to the Bahamas, Will's Traveler performed as expected and the trip was a total success. Bill will
spend a few weeks on Will cleaning and making minor repairs before traveling to South Dakota for the summer. A trip
south for the winter of 2009 - 10 may be in the works! ___________________________ The Adventures of Will W. Wilson: Book One: Will's Traveler

Will's Traveler is about the adventures of a child prodigy as he takes his small sailboat,
Will's Traveler, out into the Gulf Stream searching for his parents, lost in Hurricane Katrina.
The adventure unfolds as Will learns from his radio of the atrocities going on in New Orleans.
He avoids contact with land and ships, fearing for his life. Believing that his father is drifting
in his lifeboat somewhere along the Gulf Stream, he practices the lessons he learned from
him and his encyclopedias and sails on. He meets Bernard the whale, who becomes his
friend and benefactor and saves him from a group of Cuban exiles.
Recalling what he read about the Bahama Islands, Will takes a detour to Abaco, thinking his
father may be there stocking up on fish. He meets several friendly Bahamians who help him
survive by teaching him to open coconuts, catch conch and lobster, and maneuver the Cays.
He meets the Olsens, who take him in and show him how to use the computer to search for his
parents. Will trades his knowledge of music for a new language and the repair of his boat.
Half adventure, half basic sailing lesson, complete with a glossary of sailing terms and
illustrations of sailboats, Will's Traveler will thrill you and teach you. And it just could lure you
to experience the joy of a sailboat.

Chris T., Maryland
"I finished both books and want to commend you on the way you relate your sailing expertise
in such a way children can understand. Jakob was all ready to get a life jacket and go sailing!
Even this old "Granny" found interest and wonder in the travels you described." Betty, SD

Part adventure, part sailing instruction, Will's Hunter continues Will's thrilling search for his parents. Follow
Will's survival at sea and discover his exciting new life after rescue. Can he find his parents?
About the Book
Will's Hunter, the sequel to Will's Traveler, continues the adventures of Will, a seven-year-old prodigy,
as he sails the Atlantic in search of his parents, whom he hasn't seen since Hurricane Katrina destroyed
their home in New Orleans and separated him from them. In the first novel, Will was befriended by the
Olsens, who cared for him as he learned more about sailing, classical music, and languages. Friendly
Bahamians and whales also aided our young protagonist. In this sequel, Will ambivalently leaves the safety
and friendliness of the Olsens' home because he must discover the fate of his parents. Following the Gulf
Stream and sailing the Intracoastal Highway to the Chesapeake Bay, Will increases his self reliance but also
learns to trust new friends who aid him in his quest. Once again, Bernard the whale compassionately and
instinctively leads the boy from impending disaster to safe waters. As Will crosses the Atlantic, his boat
founders, but he is saved by boarding a stranded racing boat, HUNTER. Will's intelligence allows him to
master the complex boat with its modern computerized gear. Will sails eastward and discovers the fate of the
boat's owner. Arriving in England, he is greeted by the Queen! Treated as a hero, Will recognizes that his life
will never be the same. This sequel will give you anxious moments as Will's survival skills are tested. You
also will vicariously be thrilled with Will's new life and the choices he makes. You will also revel in your new
knowledge about sailing, for this book will teach you sailing terms and procedures as Will explains them and
learns new ones. If the first book got you interested in sail boats, this one will have you racing one!

4. Why did you portray Will as a child prodigy? (Bruce of Allentown, PA)
It gave me the liberty to have Will know and do some things that a five or six year old otherwise
wouldn’t be able to know or do. Learn new languages, play musical instruments, for example.
And wouldn’t it be fun to be so smart?
3. Are The Adventures of Will W. Wilson based on any reality? (Jan of Baltimore, MD)
Yes, they are. I have experienced many of the events in the book while out sailing. They have just
been fantasized a bit. For example, Ellen MacArthur is a real person, a real British sailing heroine.
And I, just like Will, ran into the red ants on Grand Cay! 2. Does Will find his parents in Book Two? ( Lynn of Annapolis, Maryland)
Will discovers what happened to his parents. You'll have to read Will"s Hunter to find out;
What I can say is that life gets very exciting for Will and he finds out that he is very much loved!
1. Have you sailed to all of the places that Will does in the books? (submitted by Gracie of Chester, SD)
Almost all of them. I have sailed much of the Atlantic Ocean, but not the northern part to the British Isles
as Will did. I hope to sail there in the future.
Two of my granddaughters, Anna Zwingelberg and Dakota Teets, did the illustrations
for Will’s Traveler as well as those for Will’s Hunter. Dakota did the cover on Book
One and Anna’s drawing is featured on the cover of Book Two.
Dakota’s brother Jackson, suggested they make a coloring book of their illustrations.
Stay tuned!
